Thin Technologies of 3PAR operating system is part of the operating system named HP 3PAR System Software Suite. Its basic duty is running various algorithms on disk space in the storage and make this space used economically without concession.


What is Thin Provisioning?


Thin Provisioning: by bringing dynamics to the fixed spaces reserved for running apps on storage, it gives enough space for each app. Therefore, the data is kept with maximum efficiency. When the mail address is taken, it says we give 50 GB space but it is not given right away, the increase is made automatically when the user’s mailbox is nearly full.

Example Scenario: 10 Gb space is identified for a SQL Server that is working on virtualization, but actually, the total data on SQL Server is 2 Gb. In this case, 8 GB space is kept useless for SQL Server. When it is the same for the other apps, much more space awaits there with no use. 3PAR manages this situation dynamically and identifies enough space for each app. This operation is made by ASIC Chipset. In the competitors’ products, Thin Provisioning is made by CPU so you cannot get the same performance.







What is Thin Conversion? (Zero Detection)


Thin Provisioning: as you know, each text that we write equals to groups of 1 and 0 in machine language.

For example; 3PAR = 00110011010100000100000101010010

As you see, there are lots of 0 in the binary value of 3PAR. Thanks to 3PAR Thin Conversion, it does not rewrite unrecoverable 0s that are deleted on purpose, and the ones on unused space, so almost up to 75% space is regained depends on the data type.


Thin Provisioning

Example Situation: we all remember the numerical axis in the primary school. As it is here, let’s think that data consist of 1 and 0 are written one by one on this numerical axis, if we know where 1s are written, automatically we can guess there will be 0s on the remaining parts. Actually, Thin Conversion is similar to that. ASIC Chipset skips 0s while writing, but keeps them as a reference to read for later on. This operation is very efficient since it is done without using CPU resource but ASIC.


What is Thin Persistence?


Thin Persistence: it identifies the empty and unused spaces on actively working 3PAR and adds them to the resource pool again. So the inactive spaces become available. Thus, the unused spaces are separated to be used, so the storage keeps its from. This feature is only found on 3PAR.


What is Thin Duplication?


Thin Duplication: everyday there are many e-mails sent to businesses and these e-mails have attachments. More than one copy of the file is kept in more than one place. Thanks to Thin Duplication feature, the other copies of the original file are not written on 3PAR. Because Thin Duplication technology is especially done on most valuable and effective Flash based disks, it increases the benefit provided.


Thin Deduplication

Example Situation: let’s say there is a 5MB attachment on an e-mail you have sent. When you send this e-mail to 100 people, it will cover 500 MB space for only one file. However, if you are using 3PAR and since only one copy of this file will be kept, the maximum space this file covers will be 5MB in total.







What is Thin Clones?


Thin Clones: when it is required by the system managers who manage the virtual platforms in the data centers, any virtual machine can be cloned for different operations. Clones created means keeping more than one copy of the same data. Thin Clone Technology steps in here and only keeps one copy of the same file.


How All These Thin Features Work?


While data is written during the transition from classic data storage product to 3PAR, Thin Technologies run simultaneously. This way, while data is being written, it covers less space and the effect is seen pretty well at the first installment

Why HP 3PAR?


Although there is Thin Provisioning and Thin Duplication in most of the products, none of them can produce as integrated and effective results as 3PAR Thin Technologies. 3PAR architecture is totally structured on predictable performance and economic usage of data space.
